Baume & Mercier Watches

Baume & Mercier have been creating luxury watches since the 1830s. The Swiss company is today known the world over for its undeniable watch making contribution. Baume & Mercier is currently owned by the Richemont group.

The company has traditionally combined technological development with a creative flair and passion, to produce excellent quality timepieces that are appreciated by large numbers of watch lovers. The company’s story begins in 1834 in Les Bois, the Jura mountains in Switzerland. It wasn’t until the 1920s that the Baume & Mercier brand as it is known today came about, when the company was based in Geneva.

At each stage in the company’s development, it systematically spread to various locations across the globe, making an impressive name for itself in many different countries.

Moving toward the middle of the 20th century, the company continued its development with a modernist influence on the design approach, while still respecting the long watch making traditions that had already made the brand great.

Notable watches that helped to cement the brand’s excellent reputation have included the Marquise watch in the 1950s, the 12 sided Riviera in the 1970s, and the Linea in the 80s. In the 1990s the company enjoyed great success with its Hampton model, which has gone on to be a real star turn for the brand, continually turning up in various incarnations throughout the following years.

In terms of the company’s commercial history, it was bought by Piaget in the 1960s, and then in turn by Cartier controlled PBM International in the late 1980s, before coming under the Richemont umbrella at the tail end of the 20th century.

In recent years, Baume & Mercier watches have become associated with high fashion, enjoying links with the fashion industry. The attention paid to innovation and creativity as well as technological excellence certainly seems to have paid off for this remarkable company. Equally known for their artistic design achievements as for the engineering and performance aspects of watch making, Baume & Mercier have continually managed to evolve in a way that guarantees their survival as a presence to be reckoned with.
